Countless organizations and charities work to help individuals or communities in need. Above types of company, organizations are usually considered not-for-profits.

A not-for-profit organization means that does not earn any profits for its proprietors or other words we can say that for organization owner. In its place, the non-profit or organization contributes the money it obtains to help fund the organization’s

For profit vs not for profit

Actually the key difference between for-profits and not-for-profits is how the company or organization handgrips its income or profits. A for-profit company, organization, or business allocates profits to owners.

While they may change when it derives to control profits, for-profits and not-for-profits do have some likenesses. Naturally, not-for-profits use the same trade plans and methods as for-profit company or organizations. The both organizations set targeted areas and want to achieve them.

Not-for-profit organizations or company use excess income to achieve its objectives, or for self-preservation, rather than distributing them as profit or dividends.

Non-profit organizations are usually exempted from tax because they are businesses that are considered to operate for the benefit of the public. People are encouraged by the federal government to donate to these kinds of organizations by letting them deduct their donations from their taxable incomes.

 Other Nonprofit Organization Categories

Private and Public Charities – To date, the largest existing group of nonprofit organization in the United States are the organizations under section 501(c)(3) of the tax code. The said section can be applied to religious, educational, charitable, scientific, literary organizations, or those testing for public safety, aiming to foster national or international amateur sports competition or prevent cruelty to children or animals.  The mentioned organizations are further sectioned by whether they are being operated by private individuals or by a public or government organization. The organizations that are under the 501(c)(4) code may also serve similar purposes but they are allowed to participate in political lobbying in methods that are not allowed to be done by organizations under the 501(c)(3) code.

Beneficiary Societies and Organizations – Other types of groups that includes teachers, veterans and government workers come up with associations which allow members of the group to take part in retirement or insurance plans or to buy legal services at rates that are discounted. These kinds of associations are often nonprofit organizations. They are usually organized under one of various subsections of section 501(c) depending on what class of group is involved. An example of this is the teacher’s retirement fund which falls under the subsection 501(c)(11), whereas the veterans organization falls under the subsection 501(c)(19).

Cooperatives – It is the section 501(c) of the tax code where some types of cooperatives or co-ops fall under. Case in point, tax-exempt status is granted to cooperative hospitals service organizations under section 501(e) of the tax code. It is the section 501(f) that governs over cooperative educational or service organizations but it is section 521(a) that covers the cooperative farm associations.

How to Start a Nonprofit Organization

Over the years, a number of nonprofit organizations have been put up. Unfortunately, not all those nonprofit organizations lasted and this is because there are some that did not really consider what type of enterprise they want to carry out. Avoid making the same mistakes and carefully think over if you really wish to jump into the nonprofit field. Assess before you act. Once you have decided to give it a go, here are the steps on how to start a nonprofit organization:

Research – Being passionate for your cause is essential but take note that a nonprofit is basically a business and you have to be truthful in putting up one. Ask yourself questions like if there really is a need for the organization that you wish to put up or would it be better to just team up with an already existing nonprofit organization. A nonprofit organization that already exists can be your fiscal sponsor until you are able to register your own organization. Make sure that a nonprofit organization is the type of business structure suitable for what you have in mind.

Business Plan – A nonprofit organization is, more or less, still a business, but it is a different version. You must still come up with a business plan because just like any other business, you would need to have sufficient money to go around in order for your organization to survive and succeed.

Qualify as a Nonprofit – Remember that there are several kinds of nonprofit organizations. Determine where you would want to fall under and that your cause will surely qualify as a nonprofit.

Legal Requirements – The state and the federal government heavily regulates nonprofit organizations to make sure that their citizens are protected from any kind of fraud. Know that you are not protected from any form of trouble just because you have declared that you are a nonprofit organization.

Good Records – Ensure that you constantly keep good records. If you actually begin with a good record, there is lesser chance that you will run into problems later on. Note that keeping good records is a must for nonprofits and that you will be facing reporting requirements that are especially for nonprofit organizations.

Preliminary Fund Raising Plan – Develop a preliminary fund raising plan. It is a sophisticated, complex and competitive effort that you would have to face if you want to put up a nonprofit organization. A bake sale nor a fancy dinner will not do the trick. You need to carefully plan and carry out the fund raising activity because this is how you will fund your organization.

Effective Board – Come up with an effective board because they are the ones who will be legally responsible for keeping you on track with your mission. They are very essential because they, too, will be the ones to provide you with the expertise that you would need and they will likewise help you secure funds that   to achieve your goals.
